“Like the creation of any successful artifact, a web site needs to evolve. It involves planning and preparation, and takes shape over a period of time.”
Elliot Jay Stocks
So I’m starting a new personal website again. The last time I did something you could probably call a website is about one year ago. Meanwhile lots of new technologies arrived and I’m definitely not up to date. Furthermore being a wannabe webdesigner and not having a personal website/portfolio just isn’t on. That’s why I’m starting this project. But this time I want to make it differently. I realised that from time to time I become highly motivated and want to learn the newest things, change my lifestyle and want to get really good at something. The problem is, that those times wont last for long and soon after I’ve achieved considerably less then hoped-for. But there are some strategies which I think could help me getting things done. Those are:
Start Small
At those times, when I’m highly motivated I wanna do all the things all at once. Shortly after I have to realise that it is too much and that I won’t get anything done.
Write it down/Make a plan
When I write down my ideas I can’t forget them and in times I’m less motivated I have a little reminder of the times when I wanted to make a change. By planing things I become aware of possible obstacles. In this way I can prepare and won’t be surprised.
Set up public accountability
By making a commitment it’s less likely that I give up my plans, because I don’t want to fail before other people.
“What has all this to do with the website project” you may ask. I’ll try to consider all those techniques in the development process of my new homepage. I’m starting small; that’s why this site now has only the default wordpress template. I’ll write down my plans, my considerations, reflections, inspirations and courses of action. Thereby I hope to make the website interesting for others. People should come to my website and be part of the evolving process, exactly know why I did something in a special way, which resources I used, from where I get my inspiration etc. And by telling you all this I’ve officially made my plans public :-)
So I hope now you’re all full of expectations and follow my journey and help me get new insights.
